How to Backup & Restore WhatsApp Data
Overview
This guide explains how to back up your chats from WhatsApp Personal and restore them into the WhatsApp Business App on Android devices using Google Drive.
⚠️ This process is Android only. iPhone does not support restoring chats from WhatsApp Personal to WhatsApp Business.
When to Use This
You should follow this process if you:
- Are switching from WhatsApp Personal to WhatsApp Business
- Want to keep your existing chat history
- Are using the same phone number on WhatsApp Business
WhatsApp allows chat restoration only during the initial setup of WhatsApp Business.
Requirements
Please make sure all of the following are met:
✅ Android device
✅ Same phone number for WhatsApp Personal & Business
✅ Same Google account used for backup
❌ Do NOT install WhatsApp Business before backup
❌ Do NOT clear app data before restoring
Backup Chats (WhatsApp Personal)
- Open WhatsApp Personal
- Tap ⋮ (Top right) → Settings
- Go to Chats
- Tap Chat backup
- Select Back up to Google Drive
- Choose a frequency (Daily / Weekly / Monthly — not “Never”)
- Select the Google account
- Tap BACK UP and wait for completion
Restore Chats (WhatsApp Business)
- Uninstall WhatsApp Personal
- Install WhatsApp Business from Play Store
- Open WhatsApp Business and tap Agree & Continue
- Enter the same phone number
- When prompted, tap Restore from backup
- Wait until the restore completes
- Finish account setup
✅ Your chat history should now appear in WhatsApp Business.
Important Notes & Limitations
- 🔒 Old messages can only be restored once during setup
- 🔁 You cannot restore again if you skip the restore step
- 📱 Group chats will restore, but WABA (API) does not support group chats
- 💬 For WABA users: use WhatsApp App/Web to view group chats
